Closes without warning??

Post by Trugmaker »

WWB 16 is brilliant but spoiled by suddenly just closing without warning and not saving my work?? Any ideas?

There are no known issues with WB17 otherwise these issues would have already been fixed.
If you think there is a problem then please describe the exact steps to reproduce this behavior.

Pablo,

I think there is an underlying issue somewhere, but it's very rare. I have had this in the past, generally when I've been doing a lot of work, mainly with text stuff. It suddenly goes slow, won't select text, can't click on anything. It may come back enough so I can click on Save, but then it freezes for about 5 seconds and then it's gone. I have a vague feeling it may be when you create a new text block, but as I said, it's very rare (maybe once a month, I hit this).

Restart it and it's all OK again. To me, it reeks of a memory leak somewhere, but I've never been able to reproduce it enough to verify it.

As Crispy says - save often.

I too have had something similar happen, although fairly rarely, which makes it difficult to provide exact details. If I recall, it was when I went to publish a web page I had just modified (local publish to my PC - Win10). The program suddenly closed on me. It has happened 2 or 3 times, since moving to version 17.

Another weirdness to WWB17 (maybe) is that the first time I downloaded and installed ver 17, some time after launching the program Malwarebytes detected the program as containing Ransomware, quarantined the application and deleted the .exe program file. I had to re-install the program, and create an 'exeception' in Malwarebytes, but the same thing happened after each incremental upgrade. I updated to ver 17.0.4 recently, and the same thing happened again (quarantined).

The suspected Ransonware issue may not be related, but I thought I would throw it in here just in case there is a connection.

With each update or increment the birary code of the program changes slightly. This inturn can be seen as a possible threat by AV or Malware detection software due to the minor changes to program. Hence why you get a warning to the delete or quarantine it where in fact it is really just a "False" positive. To "Fix" or "Resolve" the program should be added to "White" list of the AV software that is saying this so not to "Flag"it again.

Yes, this it may be related to a firewall ,virussanner or Ransomware protection

If you think it is related to the software then please describe the exact steps to reproduce the problem because otherwise there is nothing I can do to investigate this behavior.

I will be sure take note of the steps taken the next time there is another incremental upgrade, and report back.

I only mentioned the 'Ransomware' issue because since using WWB from version 12 onward, it was only at version 17 that the Ransonware warning appeared. And, the "Closes without warning" problem the original poster experienced, is also the first time I experienced this problem.

I was just curious if the two issues might be related.

I don't think so as I have never had a 'ramsomware' issue.

Starting from 16 I have the same problem. WWB closes by itself, without warning and without exact reason. I wrote about this a few months ago, but the problem still exist. I've learned to live with it by applying the crispy 68 rule:

Did you check the windows event log? Maybe this has a clue?
Normally, software does not close itself without a warning.

Unfortunately, the error log does not contain any useful information.
I need to know the 'context' of the error. The software has thousands of options and millions of possible combinations. I need more specifics.
Do you remember what you did before the error occurred?
Can you reproduce the error?
If yes, what are the exact steps?

Pablo,

I cannot reproduce the error. This time it happened after the .wbs file was closed. I had been working on adding pages and copying text and pictures from an old (16.4) site. I had been previewing and publishing. I saved the site and closed it. As I did the close, the program seemed to freeze for about 5 seconds and I knew then that it would hang and exit, because I'd seen that many times.

Thinking about it, it does generally happen if I've been working on a site a lot, then close it to start on another one. But not always. Sometimes (twice that I can remember), it's been after I have been adding and editing text. The system seems to freeze - I can't select or edit anything for a while. Then, it 'comes back to life' enough for me to save the project. About 20 seconds after that, it crashes. But as for reproducing it each time, no I can't. It's not one particular site. My settings are, in the main, all the defaults that you give me, apart from Direct2D being turned off. I have the number of backups set to 20, so I know I can go back a fair way if things go wrong. I've got some extensions added. My sites have anything from 10 to 60 pages. But not 100's.

I'm not sure what else to tell you. It does occur. But I'm used to it and it doesn't worry me. But I can uderstand it may worry others.

If there's anything I can set to give you more information, let me know (a debug setting, maybe?).

cheers

Alan

I do not think this is 'random'.
I have not seen this behvaior myself and I think I am using the software more than anyone else. So, it must be something specific to your workflow.
It's important for me to know the exact steps to reproduce this behavior, otherwise there is nothing I can do to find a solution.
