WYSIWYG 17 slow load on win 11

Post by M0mgp »

Good day,
I have new win 11 machine.
Downloaded latest WYSIWYG version 03-04-2022 and entered my license number.
Task bar icon or short cut from home screen identical symptoms.

Turn on machine
Win 11 starts normally, within 3 seconds
Click on WYSIWYG icon in start bar or short cut
Wait up to 2 minutes for the program to load, after which time it works fine until I close and wish to start again, then the same symptoms again.
It may be me but I have no idea what is happening here, been using this program forever.
Assistance please

I found WWB very slow to load when I was on holiday and using a very slow internet connection. When I turned networking off on my laptop (Windows 10), it loaded in 'normal' speed. I have no idea why.

Try turning the network off on your PC and see what happens.

Maybe the software is blocked by your virusscanner or firewall?
For example, 'check for updates' may be enabled. And if the connection with the server is blocked then it may take a while before it times out.

My WB v17.2.1, using Windows 11, has become very slow to open.
Once I click on the icon, the flash screen shows immediately and then disappears.
I then have to wait a minute or 2 before WB comes up.

Previously, It did not do this.

I have turned off access to the internet to check for updates.
I have given authorization to ignore the WB program folder in my MalewareBytes virus detector.
I have completely disconnected from internet and then opened WB to a local file, but that did not help.

Something has happened with the latest update???

Any suggestions?

I doubt that this has anything to do with the update.
Maybe you have installed a lot of extensions, icon libraries or Goggle Fonts?

Try turning your connection to the internet off (disable your network).

I bet it loads really fast.

It won't matter for us if wwb become heavier on file size taking more disk space but still working blazing fast. That's an improvement everyone would like I think.

Thank you alan_sh.
your suggestion works;

After finding that the above suggestion did allow WWB to start at its normal blistering pace, 2 seconds, I revisited all my conne tions and settings. To my dismay nothing I can see to stop it loading normally, which is what I pre iously observed, all settings correct.

As a workaround, I will just disable internet when I start WWB then immediately turn it back on and all is fine.

Thanks to all for offers of assistance and suggestions.

Pablo - there is SOMETHING in the loading process - it's not just me that sees this.

Do you have a flow diagram of what happens? Could it be one of the Microsoft modules?

Re: WYSIWYG 17 slow load on win 11

Post by Pablo »

During the loading process the following happens:
- check for updates (if enabled)
- initialize msftedit (richedit)
- initialize Direct2D
- show splash screen
- verify folders (system folder)
- load gradients, file types, animations, tables styles, swatches
- load web fonts
- load google fonts
- load icon libraries
- load extensions
- initialize UI

There should be no connections to the Internet if 'check for updates' is disabled.

Maybe the Windows 11 firewall does not recognize the signed application file?

No it's beyond that. It's after the splash screen when it seems to pause for a while if there's a slow intenet connected.

Pablo, how do you verify folders? Is it a Windows system call? If so, maybe Windows is checking network links or something>

'Verify folders' is system call to make sure all folders (extensions, fonts etc) in the documents folder exist.
But, I doubt that this is related to this issue. It seems network related.

With my systems, I have a bunch of network folders assigned to drive letters. I wonder if Windows does a scan of them every time you do that system call. I have them even if I am on a slow network.

I may check this later on and see whether not having them makes a difference.

Re: WYSIWYG 17 slow load on win 11

So I did a very quick test. Loaded up WWB with all my network and SUBST'ed connections. This is on a fast network and it took around 15 seconds to load up. I did this 3 times so things got cached.

I then disconnected all my drives (I had about 6 of them) and removed all the SUBST'ed drives (another 5). DId the load again - it took 10 seconds.

I then put my laptop in flight mode and did it again - 9 seconds.

Put all the network and subst'ed drives back and it took 13 seconds.

Bear in mind this is on a very fast wifi network - so the differences will be minimal.

So, my thoughts at the moment are looking at the system call to check the folders - I think Windows is doing something under the hood (I'm going way back in my memory when I used to do network and system programming with DOS & Windows) which means it checks all drives when looking at the system/data disks.

So can anyone else who is seeing this slowdown check what network drives or network connections they have?

You need a tool that can intercept the system call that Pablo uses and traces what it's really doing. I'm not sure there's anything outside the windows dev team that can do that.

Doesn't this help?
LastActivityView
LastActivityView is a tool for Windows operating system that collects information from various sources on a running system, and displays a log of actions made by the user and events occurred on this computer. The activity displayed by LastActivityView includes: Running .exe file, Opening open/save dialog-box, Opening file/folder from Explorer or other software, software installation, system shutdown/start, application or system crash, network connection/disconnection and more... You can easily export this information into csv/tab-delimited/xml/html file or copy it to the clipboard and then paste into Excel or other software.

Alan, with all of those drives, where is WWB trying to run from? Is everything on one drive or have you set up WWB to use some of those 11 drives?

It all runs from my C: drive. All the others are just there for convenience.

Not really, it's a static view obtained from various files. What we need is something that is intercepting and monitoring system calls as they happen.

I tried that but it didn't see WWB at all. So, I guess it's not a 'hanging' situation, but just waiting for a system call to complete somewhere.

In order to detect hang problems of 64-bit applications, you must use the 64-bit version of WhatIsHang.

No suggestions to add; just a "for what it's worth".
I'm running WWB17 on a 4yo HP workstation that was upgraded from Win10 to Win11.
Not seeing this problem; load times are fast (2 seconds-ish).
Good luck,

Okay, bumped to 17.2.1, May 11 version.
No discernable change.
Loading is still fast - 2 seconds or less.
I'm willing to do other tests if needed.

PS:
Just thought I should add that I have no extensions installed.

WWB is installed on and loads from the local system drive (SSD).
There are several smb shares on a TrueNAS Core server on the LAN, but drives are not "mapped" as drive letters to the workstation.
The workstation is on a gigabit wired interface and internet is 500/500 (fiber to the closet).
Also, auto-update in WWB is OFF.
If I misinterpreted your question, or missed anything, let me know.

I think it's mapped network drives that slows things down - at least that's my interpretation of what I've seen.

My home system is similar to yours - gigabit network. Reasonably fast wireless (up to 500mb/sec depends how far I am from the router). Synology NAS. 600/42 internet connections. But I have 6 mapped network drives.

Re: WYSIWYG 17 slow load on win 11

Post by Daniel Baran »

I've never liked the way Windows handles mapped network drives.
A while back I discovered a different method that seems to work better.
Instead of mapping drives, I tried the "Add a Network Location" feature in Windows Explorer.
It might be good to "unmap" any drives before trying this method.
Click through the wizard, and add the shares as a network address.
Something like this:
\\192.168.88.249\ShareName
In doing so, the shares will show in Windows Explorer as Folders instead of Drives.
I have no idea why, but since changing to this, I find that the shares are always immediately
available, and the odd lags in browsing networked shares are no longer present.
Since this is on the Windows configuration side, I assume it should work with most any NAS.
This might be worth a try.
Even if it does not solve the WWB load time issue, you may find accessing your shares to be smoother (as I have).
Good Luck

Just done that test using my TP-Link mobile router. Took around 4 seconds to load.

So, as far as I am concerned, I've found the issue - it's the network connected drives. And we have a solution too.

It seems like this should probably be the default way to connect
local network shares to Windows boxes, but that Microsoft has
not done a good job of disseminating this method.
