How do y'all handle video BGs these days, on WB?

Post by etcbbu »

Hi all, I have a few projects where, when wanting to use a video as a background on a page, I use the following method:

- insert a "Layer"
- make it "Floating"
- call it a "video" type of Layer
- set it to YouTube, and insert the "EMBED" URL of a video uploaded to YouTube

And here's the most recent place I'm doing this:

https://impacttinandaudio.com

But let me ask — is there a better way?

If you'll notice, whenever you look at the site on a 320-pixel width (the smartphone breakpoint size, I basically just "Hide" the Layer when I'm in Design mode within my .WBS file, on the 320-breakpoint. Because the videos just don't seem to play for me on smartphone / mobile size when viewing the site live, when I've done this on various projects.

*BUT* I have seen plenty of other websites have video on their Mobile-version of their pages.

How do y'all suggest executing something like this with WB, in .WBS files?

To play background video on mobile device, the video should not have audio.

@Pablo. Makes sense, thank you.

So as far as this example, does that mean if I find a switch to flip with this YouTube video on YouTube, and I "disable audio", that would make it work correctly?

Or is it when you strip audio out of a video before you upload it to YouTube, and then that's how WB automatically knows there's no audio information coming out, and will then show it?

Well never mind. I could have sworn I used to see a "No Audio" option in YouTube's back-end of individual videos, but I guess not anymore.

Just gonna Import the video into CyberLink PowerDirector, Link/Unlink audio from Video and Audio, delete Audio, and re-upload to YouTube that way; and then use a new embed URL for the Layer in WB.

Thanks, Pablo! I'll post again if something else comes up with this.

Well, got it working:

https://impacttintandaudio.com/

Any idea on how to remove the YouTube identifier information from loading with it? Also, is it loading at an okay speed for everyone, if anyone else could try it on smartphone? Seems like it takes forever to just *start*, on mobile..?

First, how do you get audio to come through on versions of video you pipe-through to Layers that *DO* have audio on them? On the layer with video here: https://impacttintandaudio.com/ , no audio is coming through..?

Secondly, could someone have a look and see if it works on both a Desktop/Laptop device, and on a smartphone? Just let me know if it's playing on both. I've now got one Layer set to play the version I uploaded onto YouTube *WITH* audio (the Desktop version, mentioned above ) ; and then hide that layer and make visible a second Layer that's set to be the version I uploaded to YouTube *WITHOUT* audio: https://impacttintandaudio.com .

Audio is disabled by the browser(s) by default so if you require audio you will need to implement a on/off so that the user can choose ti listen to or not. To be honest with you I find it annoying when you visit a site and it has audio playing automatically. I know from similar questions about this the reply is the same...

You think embedding a .WAV of the audio, and then a little icon "on top of" the video [visually] that lets the user "play" the .WAV is a good way to handle this? And just put it as an automatic File-Download when someone visits the page [if "File-Download" is even still an object in WB, is it called something else/done some other way now]?

Yes this could be done I might go with mp3 for audio rather that wav myself. For downloads see the following reading from
Link to a file (ZIP, PDF etc)
