Variable Fonts

Post by gofrank »

I have a project originally started in WB18 using the "Cabin" font. In v18, I was able to specify "Cabin Bold" as one of the styles and all worked as expected.

When WB19 came along, I opened the v18 project and saved it exclusively as a v19 project. Now, of course, WB19 recognizes variable fonts, of which "Cabin" is one. However, v19 warns me in the errors list that the font "Cabin Bold" is not installed (yet the bold version is rendered correctly in both preview and the browser under v19).

Using WB's Google Font Manager, I uninstalled the "Cabin" font. I then went into the WB "system" directory and removed all the downloaded fonts. Restarting WB19, I then used Google Font Manager to reinstall the "Cabin" font. When I go to Style Manager and select the "Cabin" font, there is no "Advanced" button to allow setting the font weight. I can set the weight in Google Font Manager, but as soon as I click "OK", those settings are lost.

Am I missing a step somewhere?

Both the <h2> and <h4> tags in the project use "Cabin" and the settings for those two in Style Manager shows "Cabin Bold". If that is changed to "Cabin" the option to adjust the variable font to a heavier weight is not available.

I am using the latest build 19.0.2.

When I open your project I was asked to install the font, after that I did not get any more messages.
Also, I can edit the font variations in styles.

I don't think 'Cabin Bold' exist anymore. It's not a separate font. To make Cabin Bold, select 'Cabin' and then make it bold.

Maybe you did not enable this in Tools -> Options -> Fonts -> Display Font Variation properties?

Note that it's impossible to support the 'old' and 'new' Google Fonts at the same time. So, unfortunately it's not possible to make it 100% backward compatible because it works completely different.
At some point I had to make the choice whether to 'go for it' and redesign the whole thing to support variable fonts.

Bingo! That was it! All is good now.

Thank you, Pablo!
