Image orientation incorrect when inserting an image to web builder page

Post by dngrmse »

Ok, so I know a Demo project would be preferrable but I don't have any hosting set up yet so I will provide a hopefully detailed explanation of my issue.

So I am using the latest version of WB (64 bit). And for the purposes of problem solving the issue I am using a completely fresh web project page (HTML) so no extensions or anything else applied to the page.

I want to insert a photo from my computer into my web project.

I click Insert > Image

Then drag the image box onto my page and release the left mouse button.

The file selection box opens and I find and select my image file which in this case is a .JPG file.

Now this is where it gets weird.

Firstly, the image selected ALWAYS displays on the page rotated 90 degrees to the left. e.g. if the image is a tree then the tree appears lying on its side. (The original saved image is orientated correctly).

Now two things, firstly the image loads proportionately (the width and height ratio of the image are the same as the original image file), and the image can be resized proportionately by dragging a corner of the image. However the image is still rotated 90 degrees left while doing this, so this is not very helpful for placing it correctly within the web page if I want to actually be in the orientation of the original image. But also, the image does not insert as the same dimensions as the original image, instead it inserts as whatever size I had happened to drag the image insertion box to (small box=small image, large box=large image) - my understanding is that the image box should automatically resize based on the image file selected, is this correct?

If I click the '...' symbol at the top right corner of the image and select Image Tools > Rotate Right 90 degrees to try and get the correct image orientation for placement within the WebBuilder page then I can no longer click and drag the corner of the image and have it resize while retaining the correct image ratio.

When I pre-view the page using F5 the image does display in the correct orientation (not lying on its side), this occurs even if I haven't manually rotated it 90 degrees prior to publishing. However surely the image should insert to WB in the correct original orientation and allow proportionate resizing?

Hope that makes sense

Please note that the software does not rotate the image(s) they are inserted "AS IS". This is due to how the photo was taken by the camera and the EXIF data contained within the image. So even if you rotate it in the program the EXIF data is read by the browser and displays it as is intended. For example if image (photo) was taken at Landscape and you rotate to Portrait in the program the browser will still return to Landscape due to the mentioned EXIF data in the image (photo).

See the following urls that will explain this better.

Thanks for your response BaconFries.

After your reply I did a little test. I took a photo of an object in landscape (L) and then the same object in portrait (P) on my camera. I then inserted both images to WB using Image>insert.

The images taken in Landscape displays correctly both within WB and in pre-view mode. However, the portrait image is displayed within WB rotated 90 degrees, which means it can't be manipulated/resized (maintaining portrait aspect ratio)/placed correctly within the WB page. When published the portrait image displays in the correct orientation but its aspect ratio is out.

Hopefully the link to screen grabs of the issue will explain better. The image on the right in each screen grab is the image taken in portrait orientation on my camera.

Here is a link to screen grabs I took of the WB page and the preview page https://photos.app.goo.gl/5M6PsH4tQMRmgoPk7

You will need to rotate the image before adding it to the page. The image will be published "AS IS". The software will not rotate it or resize the image taken with your camera.

Ok, thanks. I think I understand this now. Will put all my photos through an image editor first and re-save to get rid of the EXIF data.

Appreciate your patience and explanations.
