Reducing png + jpg Images Weight - (Edit)

Dear all,
This is not a real WB trick but more general one when we're building a site and often use
png images.
I found a very light freeware that permits us to reduce the weight of the png images without a visual effect.
http://psydk.org/PngOptimizer.php
A simple drag & drop of 1 or several png files and they are lighter (The old file is renamed _name).
From my side, I can estimate that I've gained around 20% and without questionning about quality, so...

It can be also useful to do the same reducing process with
jpg files.
I didn't know that it was possible
without loss of detail and (not very nice) blocks growth.
Imgslim is doing the job with ease as it is explained on this site:

Hope this helps!

199 readings and no comment...
I hoped that this could help make lighter sites and decreasing loading time, no?

WB Already has an image resample option built in.

@patr100
yes, you are right.
anyhow i tried the suggested software and i reduced png files generated by wb, although i optimized them using photoshop.
i.e.
i cropped a few images, added touches of transparency, borders and shadows with the ease of wb, and then reduced the filesize using photoshop.
after that, i used this software and i gained from 4% up to 20% in some cases.
@crochepattes
i'm really sorry, lately i haven't had enough time and forgot to post here. no-excuses, but is the truth. sorry again and thanks for your useful suggestion.
personally, i don't have a lot of images, so maybe i'm not the best parameter...
best regards to you all.
(ps: i tested the png files only)

Hi
RZ, Hi
Patr100,
Thanks for your feedback!
@
RZ: 4 to 20%, yes, this is often what I gain. Some light images can be numerous and we have generally a better result.

Hi !
Additionaly to those very good softwares, there's a very simple way to reduce jpg images weight
on line, with very brillant unexpected results :
It seems to be a very new website, their technology is explained in the FAQ section.

Here you can see a demo :

.
Well, lot of information can be given about
jpg /
png optimizing in terms of weight.
Following to the discovery of a new software, I wanted to make here a
summary in order to make things clearer.
•
JPEG :
The
first step is to use
Stripper
This freeware removes junk data and allow you sometimes to lighten your images by a 2 ratio !
It's only a "cleaning step", not really an image optimization.
Then your image being now only pixel matters, you can go to
step 2 : upload your picture to
JPEG mini.com
You will then wait a few seconds until you have a visual idea of the reasonable compression it's possible to apply to your image.
Gains are often unbelievable; going from 1,5 to 7
Step 2 a : In case you would be unsatisfied with JPEG mini :
You still can use
ImgSlim
An excellent freeware.
•
PNG :
It's very difficult to find a tool that offers better performances than
PngOptimizer
Ease of use and gains are optimum. A clear winner !
Have a nice diet !

Hi !
Update about JPG weight reduction tools.
Using
Jpegmini or
imgslim is really a chance for reducing our JPG images weight (see above)
However, some results can be time to time disappointing in terms of:
-
quality : high bytes loss but we have sometimes the impression that the tool could have been more "delicate". Jpegmini is fantastic with photos and many image types but with, for eg., vectors the result can be too "hard".
-
ease of use : jpegmini is not a software but an online tool. Imgslim is doing the job but with no possible adjustments.
In those cases, using another (free) software,
Image Converter, is the key as it offers the following advantages :
- Shell integration, meaning you can right click an element and do the reducing in a glance !
- '% of reduction' is possible. So using a %
between 80 and 94 % permits to adjust really nicely the final result.
Note that this has nothing to do with the reduction percentage of the image weight. For eg, using 80% often means that you can get a ratio of 3 of 4 in terms of weight.

PngOptimizer works great, it reduces most png by about 80%, without hardly any noticeable quality loss, especially useful for gradients.
Perhaps Pablo should include this in WB as an option or plugin, I am pretty sure the license is free for all applications.
