object manager

Hi I seem to be having an issue with the project manager, it doesn't show.
When I click on view and try to tick the box to show the object manager it will not accept the tick it just keeps returning to unticked?
I have tried removing the tick for other settings like status bar, toolbox etc but it will not accept a tick to show the object manager.
