Master Page

Post by davehappen »

So, the last couple of sites I've built I used Layout Grids, This Time I wanted to use a Masterpage, Built it, put some rubbish in it, Previewed it all fine but when I publish it that master doesn't show just the pages, I've looked at the online tutorials and cant see what I'm ding wrong.

TIA
Dave

There is no difference between preview and publishing. In both cases, the exact same files will be generated.
If the online pages do not look correct then make sure all files have been published.

Note: your website is here:

If the online pages do not look correct then make sure all files have been published.

Other tips:
- the page alignment should be set to 'do not center this page'
- document type in page properties should be set to 'html5'
- pages with forms should be 'php'
- make page names lower case.

Hi all, I've read the blurb and i can't see what I'm doing wrong, I've rebuilt the site and it previews perfectly, as soon as I publish the site master frame is no where to be seen. I've tried with Don't publish this page and without but still wont work properly. I can get the index page, but navigation menu is on the master, there is quite a few pages and i don't really want to headers and footers on every page.
Thanks in Advance
Dave

Your project looks ok.
As previously mentioned, there is no difference between preview and publishing. In both cases, the exact same files will be generated.
So, if the published page does not look the same then something went wrong with publishing.

Are there any errors in the publish log?
Did you make sure all files have been uploaded?
What is the URL of the website?

When you click on 'publish' in WWB, it produces a log. That is what Pablo wants you to look at. When you click on 'Publish', where are you publishing to? It may be that there are some files (.html etc.) that you are not copying to your host.

OK - I've never done that. I am pretty sure that the "save as" was never intended to be a publish method.

How about you try publishing to a local folder and see if there are any differences in the files saved from the method you use.

Dave,

As we have no view of your .wwb file, it's hard to know what you have in there. It would be good if you could just try it the 'normal' way to see if it works for you. That would eliminate one issue.

So, can you give it a try?

There are no 'credentials' you need to put in if it's published to a local folder. You just need to give it a name and tell it what local folder you want to use (I suggest you create one first).

All Preview does is a'publish' to a specific folder. So, yes, it should be the same and it should work.

So, take the files produced by 'publish' - ALL of them - and copy them to your hosting server.

I tried to open your test123.wbs file but I don't have the 'logo' extension, so I couldn't try it out myself.

I did try doing a 'save as html' on one of my pages and it produced the .html file, a .js file and 3 sub-filders, each with files in. Are you copying ALL those files and folders to your hosting server into the correct locations?

Well done.

At least we got it sorted.

The 'publish' method is good because it can do all your files in one go and you know you haven't missed anything.

Cheers

FWIW:
@davehappen When you say you use "Save as & HTML Documents"" did you mean you use "Export to HTML"?
I did a test and the master page doesn't get merged with the 'normal' page.
@alan_sh Where is the "save as HTML" option, I can't find it, did you have a master page in your test?
I've always used the built-in Publish.

WWBman,

Click on 'File', then 'Save as' then 'html document'. I do NOT mean export to HTML. It saves the .html, jquery-1.12.4.min.js and all necessary sub folders (that's what it did for the page I tried). Yes, I have a master page.

I agree - this is NOT the way to publish web sites. I also use 'Publish'.

That's curious. I have:
Save Web Site
Save Web Site As
Save As Template
but no Save as.
I use the Menu/Toolbar not the Ribbon.
What do you use?
