Layout grid border does full width when I don't want it to.

I have a page with a layout grid in it with 4 cells. Both the page and the layout grid are set to max width of 1280. However, when I put a border around the layout grid, the border extends to the full width of my display and doesn't stop at 1280.

So - what have I done wrong or missed off?
