Meta names tags are doubled

Post by Bloodhound2 »

I have noticed that meta name tags added as Site Properties for description, keywords and categories are previewed and uploaded doubled (repeated once) on all pages.
Author, robots and generator are fine.

Meta tags specified in the Site Properties will be appended to the meta tags of all pages.
So, if you have the same meta settings in the pages, then they will be duplicated.

By experimentation I have just worked what is happening, by defining meta tags in page properties they are also being added to master pages which I are marked not to be published. The master pages are not published but of course all their content is! I would have thought that by default master pages would be ignored; I cannot think of a reason why you would want to as it will inevitably end up with this problem. It might actually be better to place the meta tags in the master pages directly.

By the way the same doubling happens if done through multipage properties and selecting 'All' but not then deselecting masters.

Unfortunately, I cannot change the way this works because this would also affect all existing projects and some users may use the master page set their meta tags.

A change to Site Properties and Multi Pages to exclude Master Pages by default would not preclude users from entering meta tags direct into Master Pages so existing web sites, and users who choose that method, would not be affected.
