Fixed layout grid size

Hi all.
I have a new index page that I have entered the page properties section and assigned an image as the background with the option to repeat.
My question is how do you stop a layout grid from covering the whole page area when previewed? I have tried lots of seetings in the layout grid to let's say to only expand horizontally by 800 pixels when previewed but nothing is working the layout grid keeps expanding to with full width in preview mode and not showing the image I selected in the main page properties?

Any ideas please?

You can use the 'max width' property to limit the size of the layout grid.
