*** SOLVED *** Banners not displaying correctly

Post by brynj »

I will probably regret posting this but after updating to v17 I now have an issue.

I have a page that is full of links/banners - I have only moved/repositioned a couple of these banners on the page (not added/deleted any) and now when publishing I get the message that one or more file names may be invalid. Having worked without issue in v16 and older versions I now get a published page that is missing probably half of the banners. The banners are on a 'Master Page' which feeds two other pages.

The 'Publish Log' had shown one image with a space in the name, which I corrected so now publishes without error message.

All three pages 'Preview' correctly and all the images are on the server from previous v16 publishing even if they are not being published today .

I usually publish to a local folder and then upload with Filezilla - again without issue for many versions of WYSIWYG. I have also now tried using the built in publish routine but to no avail.

Sending a sample will not really help as its worked fine for several years and only v17 has created a problem as nothing else has changed - this is the only thing I have done since the upgrade so its quite conclusive. Is there some new default setting in v17 that could be impacting on the page ?

Sorry if it sounds a bit harsh but it is so frustrating when things have been working fine.

I doubt that this has anything to do with WWB17.
But maybe you did not publish all files?
If you upgrade to a new version then scripts and other files may need to be updated on the server. So, it's always recommended to publish all files to make sure all files on the server are up-to-date.

If you need further assistance then please share the URL or project file so I can see what you have done.

I only published the 3 pages with 'Publish all files' - do you think i need to re-publish the whole website ?

I am trying to identify the differences between the banners that do show and those that don't - to see if there is any clue there.

More info:
The 2 pages being fed by the master page are duplicates but in different language. I have a link where the user can link form the English version to the German version. When I click on this link at least 2 of the missing images flash for a split second - so I believe they are there but just not showing.

I cannot prove if all the non-displayed images are there at the moment as I cannot see enough of the page to confirm this whilst changing webpage.

Although it may have worked without issues in WB16 and older version it was incorrect the issues were there. In WB17 a "New" feature (one of the many) was added to "check" for invalid file names so hence the message you are getting now when publishing. You can read this at the following url below so your conclusion of a "New" feature is correct. Regarding missing files I would check that you have published these again as mentioned by Pablo and check all files and there naming.
viewtopic.php?f=1&t=93064
Publish
- New feature: added the ability to set permissions for secure ftp in "Explore'
- New feature: added 'check for invalid filenames' during publish. A warning will be added to the publish log when a non-web-safe filename is detected: invalid characters are: space, #, %, <, >, &, {, }, [, ], ?, $, :, ", ', @, +, =, | and !.

@BaconFries

I have no issue with 'improvements' but if that improvement means something no longer works when it did in all previous version then its not so helpful - a warning message is fine but its more a case of what else it does, if anything.

Regardless, I do not believe that is the case here. I continue to experiment.

My concern is that having worked upto and including v16 that now suddenly it does not work - of course it could be something else and be purely coincidental but I can only work with what I know and at this moment in time the only difference is v17.

Well I bit-the-bullet and re-uploaded the whole website (which is quite large) from v17 and its solved the problem.
