host metro=host headaches

Post by brianluce »

I've used host metro for a few years. Updated my wysiwyg and updated the site but always fails to publish. Spent all day with host metro, their tech support is terrible. Please help.

The error indicates that the software cannot to the server.
Are you sure the server supports Secure FTP?
Can you connect to the server with another FTP tool and the same settings?

If yes, then it's most likely a firewall configuration issue.
If no, then the settings are wrong.

SFTP usinf SSH2 (secure shell) is what host metro said to click in the publishing box. Is that "Secure FTP"?
Firewall already turned off. password is cut and pasted from host metro. What might the issue be?

Yes, however it does not look like the server accepts connections on this port.

Are you able to connect using these settings with another tool?

So there is another software to connect wysi with the host metro server? Like an intermediary? will this work? https://filezilla-project.org/download.php?type=client

It was simple enough to download filezilla but it still would not connect. Suggestions?

Sounds like the login and/or password is incorrect.

Maybe you are copying a space? Try pasting it in Notepad and see if it has an extra space.

If you also cannot connect with FileZilla, then the problem is not related to WWB.
In that case, either the settings are invalid or there is a problem on the server side.
Only your web host can help you solve this.

I still cannot load the site. Host Metro sent this email:
"Hello,
We tried the previously provided credentials on three different machines and were able to connect on all.
The "Authentication Failed" error points to the wrong password being used.
Would you like us to reset your password to a different one?
Let us know if you have any questions.
Regards,
Jim G"

I tried it twice and still got "Failed to publish". Here's the log:

As you can see the reply and the publish log shows that the login details are incorrect primarily the password. I would suggest you take there offer of resetting the password and try again. Please note that this is unrelated to the software but with incorrect user information being used to login to the server which only you and the host can resolve.

I also note you have had a similar issue at the following url I take it was resolved then and how see also the replies and one by yourself showing a screenshot of the settings used then and maybe they can be used.

Yes. You will need to publish your website to a folder on your computer. Then use Filezilla to upload all the files to your server.

You mean transfer the folder containing the wws site to filezilla? Is that what's meant by "publishing to a folder"?

Publishing to a folder simply means WB will create and place all the files/folders into a folder of your choice on your hard drive. In the publishing dialog you will need to select the folder where you want the files put.

Once published, you will use Filezilla to transfer the files/folders to your host.

For example, create a folder on your desktop. Name it "demo". In WB, you want to choose publish to folder and in the drop down you will select the folder you just created on you desktop. WB will then create all the files including folders and place them in the "demo" folder. Now you will use Filezilla to move all the created files and folders to your server. Once connected, in Filezilla navigate on the left to the "demo" folder and you can drag and drop to the right side and place them in your root folder on your server.

problem resolved. I asked Hostmetro to change the password to 9 digits, because Filezilla had a 9 character limit, I entered that pw in wysi and it loaded. thanks for the help.

The problem is solved, but on this topic, is this technique you outlined a good way to transport my sight to another computer?

Yes, That is what I do all the time. Publish to a local folder and then use FileZilla to copy the files to the correct place on your server.

I have always used WWBs inbuilt ftp. Works great, and you don't have to use a extra moment in your workflow. But ofcause there can be a broblem some time. Then it's good to have a backup external FTP software. I use: WinSCP which is free and as good as Filezilla
