Apparent publish problem

Post by deejayw »

I added some new text to a largely textual page that has not previously exhibited any problems. Preview shows the mods but publish seems to have little effect on the subsequently browsed page. Lots of experiments later, with frequent flush of cache, I am no further along diagnosing the problem.
It was a php page to use a counter and page protection but I've removed the counter and protection so that I can browse direct - no change.
Alternate browsers have been tried on different platforms - no change.
The publish log shows no errors. I made a clone to save the contents and created a new page. I've added stuff to the new page and updated the pointers but it also behaves in an illogical fashion. Is this a hosting issue do you think ?

Can you please be more specific?
Did you publish to the same location?
Did you use the same name?
Did you set the log level to 'all'?
What information is in the publish log?
What is the URL of the page?
What changes should we see?

Also, note that you are not using the latest update.

I edited the page properties (.html) and emptied the page, bar for a new image. The page with an html property displayed as it should. When edited back to .php it was blank, ie no image.

It looks like there is a mistake in the configuration which causes PHP to fail.
Are there any errors in the PHP error log (on the server)?
What exactly is on the page?

I don't know where to look for the server's php error log.
The page has a coloured backround and has a photo image inserted. It looks fine in preview.
A similar blank html page with the same image, when published is OK.

The first sign of trouble was when I added text to an existing (php) page. The text did not appear in the published page.

To be able to help you, I need a DEMO project (.wbs file) so I can see all your settings.
Also, please include a description how to reproduce this problem.

I do not need the complete project because that will only take more time to figure out what you have done.
Basically, I just need a small project with one page and object(s) that are relevant to your question.

Note that I cannot see what you have done based on the published page (HTML), because the software has thousands of options and millions of possible combinations.
So, there is no way to know which options you have used by looking at the HTML only.

For further details about how to share a project file, please see this FAQ:

Thanks for sharing the project.
However, this does not lo like it';s the same that that is on the server.

The page 'repsched' in your projetc only contains an image.
But that the page that is online, also contians an extension.

Are you sure this is the same page?

Sorry to be taking so much of your valuable time Pablo.
The project I sent you is not published. The pages are hopefuly representative of my published site.
repsched (with php properties) in my sample contains and image.
the published page repsched.php is supposed to contain the same image but it is missing. It seems like I can't add anything to it that will publish.
Perhaps, in my ignorance, I am unable to see what's going on behind the scenes.

Sorry, but in this case I can only help you when I see the exact content of the page.

Which extension did you use?
What are the settings of this extension?

Within the builder for my published site ..
I have cloned the repsched page (php) and called the new page repsched-h. In properties I've set its file ext to html.
I published both pages seperately. I've not done a full site publish for some time.
genpurp.uk/repsched-h.html shows a pinkish page with a photo image
genpurp.uk/repsched.php shows the same pinkish page but without the image.
The builders Preview shows identical pages.

It seems to follow therefore that if I publish my desired page as html it will publish and dispay correctly.
However, since I need Page Protection and Visit Counter on the page, it needs to be php. Wondering where to go from here.

The source code of the repsched-h.htmls indicate that the page is using the counter extension.
And because the PHP page does not work it means that there is an error in the configuration.
You can find out the exact reason why it does not work in the PHP error log of the server.

But here are a few suggestions to make the script work:
- make sure musiclist.txt exists on the server
- make sure the musiclist.txt is writable

Pablo. Sorry I had not realised that the counter was still there. musiclist.txt did not exist but it does now and is writable, however, it made no difference.
I have asked the hosting service to activate php/error logging, which will take an hour ? to function. Now awaiting results. No need to respond tks

Pablo, profound apologies !!
The bottom line is that I -----d up. The hosting file manager did not make it obvious enough to me that my counter text file was only owner read/write.
I thought that I had copied a working file with working permissions but apparently not. I needed sftp to chmod my counter file, it is now rwx/rw-/r--
All now seems to work as expected :D
Best regards and thank you.
