I can place this image, which has a transparent background, but it will display with a white background.

It might be an issue with the file format.

The image you have shared is not transparent, it has a solid white background.
Note that the image will be published "AS IS" so the software will not modified it any way (unless you apply filters).

The image you have shared is in png format but the background behind the text had not been removed when exporting.
If that image is not a logo and is just a font text, then why even need to use it as an image. Just use a styled font which is much responsive. That is what I am thinking to suggest.
