Link Counter -Track Links that are Clicked Unicode Available

Post by genieuk »

Greetings My Fellow Friends,

Update, 29/04/2009: Download link and results can now be placed anywhere on your webpage. This was meant to be in the begining but forgot.

Demo:
Due to large amounts of spam and abuse of the demos, all demos have now been removed. I do apologize for the inconvenience ... but i cannot afford to loose valuable bandwidth and cause server overload due to heavy spam on the demos. Genieuk does not earn any revenue from the Genieuk website and as such cannot afford to loose valuable resources. To test any of my extensions please just download and install in Web Builder and test the extension(s) this way.

Download: http://www.genieuk.com/webbuilder/downl ... plates.php
(please read the pdf guide inlcuded in zip file)

What this extension does:

With this extension you can track the number of times a link is clicked. It stores the information in a text file so no MySQL database needed.

For example you may want to track how many times a file has been downloaded or maybe track how many times someone been referred to another website from yours etc. The possibilities are endless.

As shown below in the picture, in this example to show you what it can do, i wanted to count how many times a file was being downloaded.

Image

As soon as i click the link a new page shows and it counts the download and stores it in the counter.txt file. See Below Picture

Image

You the website owner can also open the counter.txt file that contains the numeric value of the dowloads and see how many times the file was downloaded. You can also change the default 0 in the counter.txt file to let say something like 1857, once you save and upload it will then say
Download File
1857 Downloads Since April 2009
The extension is very simple to use, no need to complicate the URLS etc.

How to Use:

You simply place the Download Counter extension on the page you want to display the counter, in extension properties you can change font style, size, color even the text and the url to the file that is be being counter. See below picture for extension properties.

Image

Now that you placed the download counter on a webpage and configured the extension properties, you upload your website via Web Builder a file called countdownloads.php will also be uploaded automatically, this is the processing script that tracks the clicks and sends the data to the counter.txt file, All you then need to do is copy the counter.txt file (included in zip) to the same directory as the countdownloads.php and the webpage that contains the link to the file or website etc.

(if you prefer you can allow the script to auto create the counter.txt file, to allow the script to auto create the counter.txt file in the correct directory, just upload webpage that has extension on it then the go to webpage via browser click on the link and the script will create the counter.txt file for you.

IMPORTANT: You cannot have more than one counter.txt, counterdownloads.php in the same directory as of course one would overwrite the other. For every link you want to track you will need to create a folder, add the extension to the webpage in web builder and upload counter.txt to within the folder you create. You CANNOT change the counter.txt file to something else as this would not work. You also need to CHMOD counter.txt to CHMOD 777.

Regards,
Mathew

Hope You Enjoy! :D

Thanks Eddy,

Well i wanted to keep it as simple as i could and i think i have done that.

My problem is i explain everything to much sometimes and make things sound more complicated than it actually is.

There maybe another version of this soon, there is a speicifc reason why, but at the moment this will be fine. I am no programmer but i crawl the net and find scraps of scripts and try to put them together to make one extension. I do also ask for help on some other forums if needed etc.

Hi,

There is no direct download.

What that means is the activation email may end up in your spam folder so by adding that to your safe senders list it will ensure you will receive it.

It is not required. You will likely get it aynway without doing that. That is just standard messages many sites use just to ensure you receive the email, althou people mostly do, sometimes people have it auto set to delete email from spam folder hence why we say this.

Just register and ignore it, then check your email account you registered with for an activation email. It may end up in your spam folder. Either way you will get it. The registration on the site is perfectly fine.

Mathew
