Fonts an fings!

Two questions on a similar theme:- 1) On my website I predominately use Arial font. I am told this is boring and old hat! Changing my text to a different more 'cool' font, I then realised that many fonts are changed when viewed by various browsers. Are the 'Web-safe-Fonts in WWB so named because they do not change or appear the same in any browser? 2) Years ago when building my first website I was told that a welcome page was wrong because one needs to hit the viewer with instant info, but looking at 'modern' websites, there is very frequently a welcome page - have trends changed?

Any response to Question two?
Depends on the market you are trying to attract. Do you think it would benefit you more from having this with what your selling? Personally I don't see the need but it is down to what you think is needed and the sites that use it.
