*** SOLVED *** Need help with Publishing

Post by Wolksby »

Over the last few months, I updated to Windows 10, updated to WYSIWYG 15, and a few other things, but thankfully there were few, if any serious repercussions.

I've been using FileZilla to up load separates files - mainly pdfs - but have always enjoyed the ease and sophistication of the in-built Publish mechanism in WYSIWYG for amendments to my website.

I thought everything was fine. Occasionally I've had the 'Publishing Failed' message, but this has always tended to resolve itself quite painlessly.

Filezilla has an update, and I installed, as it kept the previous FTP settings. From that point on while it was able to connect to the server, it was 'unable to to retrieve the directory', and thus disconnected.

Thinking that the FileZilla update might have been the culprit, I tried to connect from my laptop, which was still running the previous version, but this showed the same problem.

I then went to WYSIWYG and I deliberately put in a text error. I uploaded this, and there error showed online.

But I noticed something odd. I have a list of all the CD covers I have reviewed so for for MusicWeb International. My process is always the same. I upload the artwork from the cover, but leave the 'Link' temporarily blank, cand caption the image ' To be reviewed'. Once I've reviewed it and submitted it, I change the caption to 'Review Pending'. Immediately I see that the review has been published I link the URL to the image. The image should be there all the time, from me saying this is one I propose to review > this is one I've now sent off to be published > this is now published here (URL).

But I've noted that the last time images still show blank on the website, even though they've both been sent off, and are awaiting publishing. To all intents and purposes, they are exactly like every other one of the 154 showing so far.

Bizarrely, though, every time I've tried to upload them again, I get the 'Publishing Successful' message, after everything's whirred through on screen, but they're still not there online. When I preview the site locally, they are!

A couple of times, I've not been able to deliberately upload a text error, even though I haven't received the 'Publishing Failed' message.

I have not knowingly changed any setting on WYSIWYG, so it's very puzzling (to me, that is)!

Any suggestions gratefully received!

Best wishes.

Are there any errors in the publish log?
Or maybe the file names are not web safe? Related FAQ:http://www.wysiwygwebbuilder.com/forum/ ... f=10&t=131
Or maybe the server space is full?
Or maybe the web host has changed something on the server side?

To be able to help you, I need more details.
For example, what is the URL of the page and where exactly do I need to look for the problem?

I'm not really qualified to answer your query, but the message 'unable to to retrieve the directory' rang a bell with me.
I was getting something similar when publishing a previously OK site, and couldn't understand it.
My Login and Password were accepted, but I could get no further.
Eventually, I contacted TcHost support Chat and they reset something to do with my IP address and everything was back to normal.
I had recently changed from Broadband Southwest to a 200 Mb fibre connection with Truespeed so perhaps my new IP address needed authorisation or something.
The above is probably irrelevant to you Wolksby, but it might help someone.

Many thanks, and most helpful!

The guy who organizes my hosting found that, like me, he could log in to my website on my behalf, but still ultimately received the 'cannot retrieve directory' message.

He had this before with some of his other clients, and he asked me to give him my IP Address (easily Googled), because occasionally these clients had similarly got 'locked out'. He has asked for the company to 'whitelist' my IP Address - which they wil be doing - then he thinks everything will revert to normal, as was your case.

Much appreciated, Don!

Best wishes

Just to say that, once my website had been whitelisted, everything returned to normal, both in terms of publishing it from within WYSIWYG itself, and via the latest version of FileZilla.

Problem solved - hopefully! 8)
