Layout grid - adding color to empty column

Trying to add color to 2 columns with no content. It's a 5 column grid and need the colors to match in the middle 3. Tried background, but it doesn't show. Added colored shape, but it didn't fill the column. Thx

By default, when a layout grid column is empty, the height is zero.
But you can set the grid system to 'flexbox' to make each column the same height.
