photo gallery question

Im using photo galleries on my site set todisplay in a light box, (fancybox)

have been using 5 columns and will display as i want in all breakpoints

having problem with when set to lesser columns / IE 3 or 1 / images will display very large on desktop view (1ooo px)
i have the gallerie in a layout grid , default overflow, flexbox, layout fluid, column height auto, floating for the position setting

i tried setting the size of the galleries with maximum width in the layout grid, but that didnt work
