I'd love to create a site that looks like this:

But I can't seem to figure out how to make a master page that has a left side menu. Any thoughts suggestions? IE having the content placeholder be on the right of a grid or other method..

Hi Hbrownell, maybe if you start making the masterpage menu as a Sticky layer "Top left" it will be easy.

You can create a menu like this with the Panel Menu or Panel Layer.
